Last weekend, die-hard fans and curious moviegoers alike flooded cinemas all over the metro to catch New Moon, the second installment of the wildly popular vampire series Twilight. The film, directed by Chris Weitz, revolves around a supernatural love triangle, at the center of which is ordinary girl Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart. Torn between her devotion to vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and her friendship with werewolf-in-disguise Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), Bella’s quest to stick by the one she loves—and stay alive in the process—is the story New Moon endeavors to unfold.
Despite record-breaking box office sales and aggressive transnational promotion, however, critical reviews for New Moon remain mixed. Take our very own Pinoy bloggers, for instance, who share the good, the bad, and the bland about the highly-anticipated flick.
Regnard Raquedan of Screensucked.com calls the movie downright boring, or specifically, “as exciting [as] watching the moon change cycles.” His major complaints center on the film’s pace and general energy level, both of which he finds lackluster.
On the other hand, Jed and Vit from Reeladvice.net are less vocal about New Moon’s shortcomings—but then again, they didn’t find a whole lot to get excited about, either. Says the tandem, “It is an okay adaptation but beyond that, there is nothing more to it—there is a sense of normalcy to this film.”
So far, so bad? Don’t get too downtrodden—if you’ve been looking forward to this sequel since the theaters stopped running Twilight, take consolation in this last blogger’s words. “I remain a Twilight fan,” shares Cerebral Insight’s Elleica, whose comprehensive review of New Moon, while far from a fangirl’s blind adulation, cites the better bits of the story with an objective eye.
