The Department of Tourism got massive criticism this week after it launched a new campaign that was bannered by a new slogan: Pilipinas Kay Ganda. In a report from GMANews.tv, the DOT called the slogan "a colorful, vibrant logo, which shows both the tropical scenery and the happy smiles of our people. A cute tarsier, a marsupial endemic to the country, highlights our unique and playful character."
The change was met with criticism, with people asking why change the highly effective "WOW! Philippines" campaign which has served as the DOT's tourism slogan for several years. To add further injury, the website put up to accompany the new slogan was taken down because it was discovered to have links to an existing porn website. Another blow which led to the untimely death of "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" was its uncanny resemblance to the slogan of the Polish tourism board.
With so many things going wrong so fast, President Noynoy Aquino pulled the plug on the campaign almost as soon as it was launched.
We are obviously a country that takes pride in the image we project to visitors; if it doesn't work for us, we are not going to put it out there. And apparently, "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" simply wasn't good enough. But what about other countries' tourism logos and slogans? Are they up to par?
