Henley and Partners, a firm that does residence and citizenship planning, has just released its 2018 Passport Index. The Philippines has moved three spots up from last year, going from 75th to 72nd, with access to 63 countries including Israel, Morocco, Kenya, and Brazil. We’re still lagging behind our Southeast Asian neighbors, however—out of nine countries, we rank sixth alongside Indonesia, (which was also the region's highest climber, going up seven spots).

Germany still holds the world’s most powerful passport, with visa-free access to 177 countries. Singapore has vaulted from fourth to second place, having visa-free travel agreements with 176 countries. Sweden, which previously held second place, now shares the third spot with Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Norway, and the UK. On the other hand, the least powerful passports in the world belong to Somalia, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

If you want visa-free access to more destinations, Henley and Partners has highlighted seven countries with the best citizenship-by-investment programs. These include:

  • Austria, which is in fourth place with access to 174 countries
  • Malta, which is in ninth place with access to 169 countries
  • Cyprus, which is in 17th place with access to 159 countries
  • Kitts and Nevis, which is in 28th place with access to 139 countries
  • Antigua and Barbuda, which is in 31st place with access to 135 countries
  • Lucia, which is in 34th place with access to 130 countries
  • Grenada, which is in 127th place with access to 127 countries

If you wanted visa-free access to the whole world, you would need to get passports from 14 countries, including the US, Singapore, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Syria, North Korea, and Afghanistan. (We’re not quite sure we’d want citizenship from the latter two nations.)

You can view the complete rankings at the Henley Passport Index website.
