Before the K-pop wave hit the Philippines, there was the Korean drama wave. With their dramatic plots and lovable characters, K-dramas took the Philippines by storm and quickly replaced Mexicanovelas on daily television.

It began with the first ever K-drama shown on Philippine TV: a series called Bright Girl, which starred a young Jang Nara as a country girl who meets the man of her dreams (Jang Hyuk) when he parachutes straight into her outdoor bathtub. The series was a hit with viewers, and it prompted the beginning of K-drama domination on TV.

From quirky shows like Lovers in Paris and Full House to tearjerkers like Stairway to Heaven and Winter Sonata, viewers fell in love with series after series until Koreanovelas, as they are known in the country, became a staple on Philippine TV.
