No longer seen as just a toy, Barbie has evolved from a mere doll into a pop culture and fashion icon in her five decades of existence. And it isn’t just little girls (and their mothers) who’ve gone gaga over Barbie—countless fashion designers from all over the world have also fallen for her charms, from Giorgio Armani to Christian Dior to Oscar de la Renta. Barbie has even worn a pint-sized wedding gown by Vera Wang and a tiny pair of shoes by Christian Louboutin!
In keeping with this high fashion tradition, the Young Designer’s Guild of the Philippines has teamed up with Barbie to create a series of little black dresses for her growing closet. An exhibit featuring the Barbie couture designs of Jojie Lloren, Joey Samson, Veejay Floresca, and many more was recently unveiled at The Gallery in Greenbelt 5, alongside the brand-new Barbie Adult Footwear Collection by Shubizz.
Looking ever the sophisticate, Barbie transformed her look from one stunning LBD to the next. In Eric delos Santos she was encrusted in gems; in Jerome Lorico she looked textured and avant-garde; in Louis Claparols she was feathered and flapper girl-feminine; in Reian Mata she presented a vintage silhouette with graphic print; in Mitzie Bustos she spiced up an unusually cutout skirt-suit; in Jojie Lloren she was a sweet and puffy confection; in Jerome Reyes she seemed regal in velvet layers; in Ferdie Abuel she worked a sheer bustle on a super-fitted frame; in Joey Samson she swirled in a sculpted skirt; in Patty Eustaquio she was minimalist and asymmetrical; in Regine Dulay she was bandaged and draped; and in Veejay Floresca she was evening-wear elegant.
