Whenever I travel, which isn't often, my choice of attire always screams "comfort." I am usually in leggings and a giant, loose shirt, and topped with a messy bun. On one occasion, much to my mother's dismay, I came back from a class trip wearing my silk pajamas. (The flight was for more than 10 hours, and I was a teenager!) That's how much I don't really care about what people say—and it's also why I've never been upgraded to first class out of pure luck.
Apart from traveling alone and being a part of the airline's frequent flyer club, another factor that affects your chances of being bumped up to first class is your attire.
A flight attendant told Who What Wear that dressing properly "definitely helps your chances...When we fly, we have a strict dress code to follow. No jeans or trainers—so I always go for tight black trousers and a blazer or a dress. For men, chinos or trousers and a shirt are worn."
If you wanna sit in first class, you gotta look the part. Here's what that means: "Smart but understated. You should look like you travel often. But don't be dripping in designer clothing.
"It helps; someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren't dressed suitably."
Once you've been upgraded, though, feel free to whip out those sweatpants because they can't exactly kick you out for that...right?
