This home is the perfect embodiment of the wonderfully laidback nature of Palawan. For one thing, there is the drama of getting to the house. From the main road, there is a five-minute walk (or a 30-second drive) through a lush, almost mystical-looking grove of Philippine mahogany trees. Then, past all that foliage, a clearing appears, where, as if out of a fairy tale, two large thatched huts emerge. One of the huts is famed Puerto Princesa restaurant Café Arturo, while the other, more enclosed, hut surrounded by kalachuchi plants, young gemelina trees, and short Norfolk pine, is the homeowners' sanctuary.

This compound used to be a weekend retreat; the owners used to live near Puerto Princesa’s pier, where they used to awaken to the sound of container vans dropping cargo to the ground. When the owners had had enough of the noise, they made plans to move out of the city, first planting the mahogany trees on the property, and then clearing out the grounds for their new home.
