This 3,000-year-old breed of sled dogs gets its name from Mahlemuts, the Alaskan tribe that originally bred them to serve as their primary mode of transportation. Also known as the Canadian Eskimo Dog, Malamutes, or Mals for short, these pooches are known for their wolf-like appearance, thick coats, and powerful builds--all of which are appropriate for what the American Kennel Club descirbes as the largest and oldest of the Arctic sled dogs.
