Most women tend to dress depending on their mood, and according to a study published by the University of Hertfordshire Press, women in jeans may not be feeling too happy. In a survey of 100 women, researchers found that more than half of the women answered that they wore jeans when depressed. Only a third said they would wear jeans when happy.
Now, one might argue that jeans have become a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. But even if they have been accepted as a form of everyday wear, researchers believe that wearing them comes with certain implications. According to Professor Karen Pine, co-author of the study, "Jeans can signal that the wearer hasn’t bothered with their appearance. People who are depressed often lose interest in how they look and don’t wish to stand out, so the correlation between depression and wearing jeans is understandable."
Apart from wearing jeans, the study also found that 57 percent of the women were more likely to wear a baggy top when depressed, compared to the two percent who would wear them when happy. Meanwhile, 62 percent agreed that they were more likely to wear a dress when in a good mood than when depressed. Twice as many participants would wear a hat when happy, while five times as many women would wear their favorite shoes when in a sunny disposition. Happy clothes, according to the study, are generally characterized as well-fitting and made from bright and beautiful fabrics.
