Hypersexuality has always been frowned upon, especially in our generally conservative society. But a recent study has shown that sexual addiction is a legitimate mental condition that shouldn’t be judged or taken for granted.

Known as satyriasis in males and nymphomania in females, this compulsion has been observed and analyzed by University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers. Working with doctors as well as marriage and family counselors, the team formed substantial criteria that would help professionals diagnose the condition.

According to MedicalNewsToday.com, “in order for hypersexual disorder to be deemed an actual mental health disorder, an individual must experience repeated sexual fantasies, behaviors, and urges that last upwards of six months, and are not due to factors, such as medication, another medical condition, substance abuse, or manic episodes linked to bipolar disorder.”

Those suffering from the condition usually use sex as a means of dealing with depression, frustration, and stress.
