Having a vision board gets you one step closer to your goal. Take motivational coach and success expert John Assaraf. According to The Daily Mail, he cut out a picture of a beautiful mansion from a magazine five years ago and later found himself living in it. Jim Carey reportedly wrote himself a check for $10,000,000 when he was just starting out and look where he is now. Everywhere, there is evidence that having a vision board in one form or another does help people create the life they want. Don’t wait for another year before you make your own. Make 2014 your year and create a vision board today by following these five simple steps:

Step 1: Gather the following materials together:

  • illustration board (15” x 20” will do unless you have a specific preference)
  • magazines (get issues that feature many of your personal interests)
  • a glue stick (ordinary glue can make your cut-outs soggy)
  • scissors

Step 2: Look for pictures that make your heart jump.

Don’t pressure yourself into looking for perfect pictures. Simply flip through the magazines and bookmark photos or headlines that call out to you. As you do this, think about what you want to accomplish this 2014. Do you want to be promoted? Do you want to pursue further studies? Any dream vacations? Be honest with what you want. This exercise doesn’t just help you recognize the possibilities of your life, it also allows you to be more discerning with your cut-out choices.

Step 3: Sort them all together, but don’t glue them on just yet.

Once you’ve cut out what you like, arrange them neatly on your illustration board. Seeing them all in one place helps you suss out which ones should stay and which ones should be discarded. Remember, your vision board is a representation of your innermost thoughts and desires, so whatever you choose should be in alignment with what you want.

Step 4: Lay them out.

Arrange them in a manner that is most pleasing to you. You can reserve the center for the photo or headline that speaks to you the most or the goal that you most want to achieve. Deciding on how to go about this can take a few minutes to a few days. Be patient with yourself. Once you’ve decided on the final layout, glue the cut-outs one by one on the illustration board. As you do this, make your intention known. Tell yourself that you are determined to work your way up the corporate ladder, to reach your goal weight, or to get your own place.

Step 5: Proceed with the finishing touches.

You can choose to wrap your vision board in plastic or leave it as it is. Display it somewhere prominent so you can see it every day. Your vision board serves as a motivational tool to help you live the best possible life you can.
