It’s important to take it easy on sugary beverages as you grow older, as Science Daily reports that women who regularly consume them may be more at risk of developing endometrial cancer than those who don’t.

Researchers surveyed 23,039 older females about their dietary habits and medical history, and they found that postmenopausal women who have the highest consumption of sugary beverages may increase their risk of the said cancer by 78 percent.

“Other studies have shown increasing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has paralleled the increase in obesity. Obese women tend to have higher levels of estrogens and insulin than women of normal weight. Increased levels of estrogens and insulin are established risk factors for endometrial cancer.” researcher Maki Inoue-Choi explains.

To lower your risk, experts recommend consuming soft drinks and other sweet beverages in small amounts and drinking more water instead.
