Last year social media was abuzz with various sightings of the smoothie bowl. If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically smoothie in a bowl topped with fruits, nuts, granola, and a bunch of other healthy goodies, oh and yes, you do eat it with a spoon. This year however, people (including my mom) cannot get enough of Golden Milk. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Read on!

What is Golden Milk?

Haldi Ka Doodh or more commonly known as golden milk, is a drink made with a combination of spices and cow's milk (traditionally, but these days its all about the non-dairy). Its star ingredient is turmeric which contains anti-inflammatory components. Typically found in Indian curry, turmeric has been widely used for various medicinal purposes in Southeast Asia for around 4,000 years. Some women opt to drink a glass every night before bed.

How it’s made

There are numerous variations of the Golden Milk recipe online. The basic components are as follows:

Step 1: Turmeric Paste

  • 1/4 c ground turmeric powder
  • 1/2 c filtered water
  • 1/2 tsp ground pepper
  • Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly. The process does not take long, so do not leave your mixture unattended. Once thick, take away from heat and let cool. Transfer in a clean container, and refrigerate.

*Paste is most effective when consumed within a week.

Step 2: Golden Milk

  • 1 tsp organic/ extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric paste (you can add more if you want)
  • 1 cup milk (coconut, almond, soy, hemp, etc. this is up to your personal preference)
  • honey/agave (to taste)

Mix everything in a pan over medium heat except the honey. Stir constantly until you reach a nice simmer but not a boil. Transfer onto a cup, add the honey or agave. At this point you can drink it straight up, you can chill it, or you can even add some coffee for that morning wakeup jolt.

What does it taste like?

Depends on your use of spice, {some recipes call for the addition of cardamon, regular ginger, and even cinnamon} the taste of the drink can vary between a Chai latte with an extra kick to Indian curry sauce with a hint of sweetness.

Potential benefits of turmeric in Golden Milk

  • anti inflammatory
  • mood booster
  • relieves indigestion
  • reduces bloating
  • eliminates gassy discomfort
  • aids in weight loss
  • antidepressant properties
  • improves brain health
  • promotes better sleep

There have been no significant side effects of the consumption of Golden Milk, but in some cases, upset stomach is the result of your body adjusting to the inclusion of coconut oil in your diet. Before you even try this, or if you experience any dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, please consult your physician.
