Having a few shots of tequila is okay once in a while, but if you’re starting to feel like you need the buzz on a daily basis, then maybe it’s time to cut back. According to a study posted on MedicalNewsToday.com, your alcohol dependency may just cut your life short.

Researchers the University Medicine Greifswald, Germany gathered samples from 4,070 respondents from 18 to 64 years old. Among these, 149 (119 males and 30 females) were alcohol dependents (ADs), who were observed for 14 years. The researchers found out that the death rates for alocohol dependents were 4.6-fold higher for females and 1.9-fold higher for males, with the mean age at death about 20 years lower than the the general population.

Drinking may actually contribute to an early death more than smoking. This is a rude awakening for women who take their dependency for granted. “We already know females tend to respond much stronger to toxins such as alcohol than males. Women also seem to develop alcohol-attributable disease faster than men do,” says Ulrich John, professor of epidemiology and social medicine and director of the Institute of Epidemiology and Social Medicine at University Medicine Greifswald, Germany.

If you know some one who’s having trouble with this addiction, you may want to assist her in seeking professional help. There are many rehabilitation centers in the country that you can approach. Putting a stop to this dangerous addiction may help save her life.
