Every year on October 15, more than 200 million people in over 100 countries all over the world celebrate Global Handwashing Day (GHD). This health crusade started five years ago as an initiative of international public and private sectors to help spread awareness about the importance of washing your hands with soap.

This year, the Philippines celebrated GHD at the L. R. Pascual Elementary School in Baesa, Quezon City. Representatives from various government agencies, corporate partners, non-profit organizations, as well as the students themselves pledged to wash their hands with soap and water that day.

Handwashing is a habit that everyone must take to heart. Children, especially, need to learn how to wash their hands properly with soap. Why? Below are five reasons why this is an urgent health issue.
