First proposed during the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the first World Water Day was observed in 1993 and served as an avenue for member nations of the United Nations (UN) to make concrete plans regarding the safety and sustainability of their country’s freshwater resources. Since 1994, the UN Water Group has organized themes for World Water Day to highlight pressing water issues all over the worldThis year’s World Water Day theme is “Water for Cities.” According to the official website of UN Water, “The objective of World Water Day 2011 is to focus international attention on the impact of rapid urban population growth, industrialization, and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts, and natural disasters on urban water systems.”
As the population in cities all over the world grows larger every day, the need for clean water to sustain life in these settlements increases as well. And since urban areas are home to most of the world’s population, there is an urgent need to make sure that people who live in cities have access to clean and safe water.
Making sure that there will be enough fresh water for everyone requires no special effort on your part.
