Today marks the first Friday of Lent, the time of year when we all put ourselves out of our comfort zones by giving up little pleasures for at least 40 days. The observance of Lent traditionally calls for fasting and abstinence; by doing so, we are able to appreciate the good things we may otherwise take for granted.
While a lot of people mark the 40 days of this season by omitting meat from their diets, there are those among us who prefer to take a more personal route and give up something they particularly love. So whether you choose to say no to dessert for 40 days, stay silent in Twitterverse, or donate a little more generously to your favorite charity, the sacrifices we make during this time are done because we believe they serve a higher purpose.
