Landslides and flash floods caused by the torrential rains that came with Typhoon Sendong (international code name: Washi) claimed the lives of hundreds of Mindanaoans and Visayans, with many more victims injured or displaced by the storm. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has reported a death toll of over 600, according to The Philippine Star, with over 80 still missing.
On Monday, Feliciano Belmonte Jr., speaker for the House of Representatives, called for his fellow congressmen and women to donate to the relief efforts. “My office asks each congressman to contribute at least P20,000 cash. This is in addition to getting relief goods donations,” Belmonte is quoted as having texted on Interasyon.com.
The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) has also called for aid. Interaksyon.com quotes the open letter to its member firms and friends: “Due to the urgent need to pool funds for the marooned victims of typhoon Sendong, we are knocking on your generous hearts to join us in helping them. PBSP is currently mobilizing donations for Mindanao as well as coordinating with our network partners for the relief-giving mission. You may call us at 5277741-48 for more details.”
However, it isn’t just lawmakers and business people who can help; everyone can and should contribute to the relief efforts any way they can.
