National hero Jose Rizal continues to inspire hope and passion in his countrymen up to this day. A doctor and a writer, Rizal expressed his anger at the mistreatment of his fellow Filipinos not through violence, but in the form of novels, essays, and other writings. Rizal opposed the idea of a violent revolution as a way of gaining freedom for the country, instead choosing to show his support with the power of his words—and what powerful words they were.
