House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas is seeking to excuse members of the House of Representatives from being immediately arrested when committing minor traffic violations.
During Monday’s transportation committee meeting, Fariñas asked the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to grant them “parliamentary immunity” in these cases, ABS-CBN reports. He explained that this will allow congressmen to perform their work better without worrying about the hassles of being late due to traffic.
“Pag nagpakilalang congressman siya at maipakitang talagang congressman, huwag niyong dalhin sa presinto. Kapag dinala sa presinto, hindi na siya makakapag-perform ng kanyang functions,” he said.
But Fariñas clarified that the immunity is temporary. An erring congressman will still be surrendered to authorities after the House session ends.
“Halimbawa nakasagasa. Nasugatan yung tao. Pag nagpakilalang congressman yan, e di saka na hulihihin. Ang aming rules po, pag natapos ang session, isu-surrender ni Speaker yung member," he said.
The proposal still needs to be studied and approved but the MMDA has already expressed its approval. Needless to say, netizens weren’t really thrilled with this development. Here are some social media reactions to the issue:
