Despite a distinct size disadvantage, Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao snagged the WBC super welterweight crown with ease in his fight against Tijuana Tornado Antonio Margarito at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas last Saturday (Sunday in the Philippines), Inquirer.net reports. The pound-for-pound fighter rained explosive combinations throughout the 12-round fight utilizing his speed against the slower Margarito, the deal almost readily sealed as soon as Margarito’s right eye started closing in Round 4. To his credit, the Mexican boxer stayed on his feet despite his bloodied face, landing some choice punches of his own as he weathered the fight until the end. In Round 11, Pacquiao himself looked at the referee hoping the fight will be put to a stop. After his win by unanimous decision, Pacquiao left spectators with words of wisdom in his post-fight interview: “I told the referee get a doctor. Boxing is not for killing each other.”
While the fight was raging, spectators from all over the world pushed hashtag #pacquiao to the top of the Twitter trending list with Mayweather, #margarito, Congrats Manny, FILIPINO PRIDE, and Pacquiao-Margarito also landing spots. Boxing fans are still clamoring for a bout with currently undefeated boxing champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. who previously did not respond when the Pacquiao camp negotiated for a fight earlier this year. Inquirer.net reports Pacquiao only had this to say when asked about Mayweather, “If the fight happens, it happens but I don’t need him [Mayweather].”
