More and more women are making their mark in fields that were once dominated by men. The field of science, for one, has been a particularly hard area for women to succeed in. But female scientists all over the world are hoping to change this by becoming more and more visible in their fields, and Filipinas pursuing careers in scientific research are no exception. Two of the women who've made the country (and their fellow Pinays) proud are Dr. Maria Corazon De Ungria and Dr. Laura T. David, who both were honored with National Fellowships from the For Women in Science (FWIS) program sponsored by L'Oreal and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
ABOUT THE FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE (FWIS) PROGRAM
The For Women in Science program, through its National Fellowships, gives recognition to female scientists who have made strides to improve the lives of people worldwide. In 2010, the FWIS partnered with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and UNESCO Philippines to search for women who have done exceptional work in the Life and Material Sciences.
ABOUT THE HONOREES
Dr. Maria Corazon De Ungria is the head of the DNA Analysis Laboratory at the Natural Sciences Research Institute of the University of the Philippines. Her work puts her in contact with different the offices of law enforcement and judiciary to provide DNA evidence to aid in the resolution of civil and criminal cases.
Dr. Laura T. David is a professor at the Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines and is an active member of the Technical Committee on Climate Change of the Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology.
Luc Olivier-Marquet, Managing Director of L’Oréal Philippines, had this to say about the two honorees: "We are deeply pleased to award Dr. De Ungria and Dr. David for their ground-breaking work and unfailing commitment to science. These women are inspirational role models. Choosing the road less taken and even with that seemingly daunting decision, they have contributed much through their hard work in their chosen fields of study."
