You’ll hear a different kind of Lady Gaga with her latest song, "Till It Happens To You." The singer teamed up with writing legend Diane Warren to compose a ballad that interprets a sexual assault survivor’s experience.
The song starts off with a slow, sad, and emotional melody, beginning with the lyrics, "You tell me it gets better, and it gets better in time. You say pull yourself together, pull it together, you’ll be fine." It then continues to say, "Till it happen to you, you don’t know how I feel. Till it happens to you, You won’t know, it won’t be real."
You could feel the despair and raw emotion as Lady Gaga sings, since she herself was a survivor. She revealed in an interview last year with Howard Stern that she was raped by a music producer when she was just 19 years old.
"Till It Happens to You" was used as the theme for The Hunting Ground (a documentary about campus rape by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering), and will soon be used for a Catherine Hardwicke-directed PSA aimed to raise awareness for campus sexual assault.
