Sports enthusiasts all over the world were dumbfounded when Power Balance recently admitted that there was “no credible scientific evidence” backing their claim that their wristbands “improve strength, balance and flexibility.” A statement on the company’s website further states, “If you feel you have been misled by our promotions, we wish to unreservedly apologise and offer a full refund.” The wristband supposedly optimizes the body’s energy flow using the twin holograms embedded on its silicone surface. Spokesman Adam Selwyn defended their side, saying that rather than science, they relied on testimonials to prove their products work. Several high profile celebrities and athletes such as Demi Moore, Robert De Niro, Shaquille O'Neal, and David Beckham all sported the wristband.
John Porcari, a professor at the exercise and sport science at University of Wisconsin-La, said tests he conducted showed no difference among 42 athletes’ performances, whether they were wearing Power Balance wristbands or their Wal-Mart counterparts. "I think it is a scam,” he was quoted as saying to AP. “It has absolutely nothing to do with the bracelets. It is all in people's heads."
