The Philippines’ national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, clinched second place in the 27th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship, losing to Iran in the finals match held on August 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The team’s achievement guarantees them a slot for the 2014 FIBA world cup, which will be held in Spain. reports that Gilas put up a good fight at the start, even managing a 36-35 lead in the beginning of the third quarter. However, Iran’s tall players--notably Hamed Hadadi, the team’s seven-foot-two center--proved too difficult to stop on the court. Marcus Douthit and Marc Pingris’s injuries also affected the team’s play.

The third and fourth quarters saw Iran’s lead soar, finishing the game with the final score of 85 over the Philippines’ 71.
