Today is Earth Day! This observance was the brainchild of John McConnell, who put forth the idea in 1969 at the UNESCO Conference on the Environment. However, it wasn't until April 22, 1970 did the first celebration of Earth Day happen. This was because then-US Senator Gaylord Nelson pushed the movement after seeing the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Twenty million people in the US took part in this first Earth Day Celebration. Years later, the 1990 Earth Day saw participation from 141 countries and over 200 million people. In 2010, the Earth Day Movement celebrated it's 40th anniversary with 183 countries taking part.This year, the theme for Earth Day is "A Billion Acts of Green." People all over the world are encouraged to make a "billion acts of environmental service and advocacy" before the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development that will be held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in June 2012. More than ever, we are called upon to do our part in saving the Earth. We are equally responsible in making sure that future generations will see the wonders that we enjoy now. This is our home, it's about time that we started taking care of it.
