Heavy rains and subsequent flooding on Thursday resulted in the suspension of all classes the following day from the preschool to the high school level for both private and public schools. The announcement by the Department of Education (DepEd), which covers all primary and secondary schools in the National Capital Region (NCR), was made following an advisory suspending afternoon and evening classes in flood-prone areas like San Juan, Pasay, Malabon, Taguig, Manila, and Pateros Thursday, June 23."All schools in NCR - Preschool, Elementary and High school no classes tomorrow, June 24, both public and private," Dr. Elena Ruiz, acting chief of DepEd-NCR, Tweeted on Thursday evening. Classes in all three levels have also been suspended in Cavite City and Antipolo City.
UPDATE: The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has said that, while classes will be suspended as per policy should the affected areas reach Typhoon Signal No. 3, it's up to the heads of the colleges and universities as to whether or not classes on the tertiary level will be suspended as well, GMANews.tv reports.
Julito Vitriolo, executive director for CHED, is quoted as saying: "Pinauubaya namin sa heads ng higher educational institution ang decision para suspindihin [ang klase]. Kung tingin nila kailangang kailangan [dahil] impassable ang roads, nasa kanila yan. (We are letting the heads of higher educational institutions make the decision to suspend classes. If they think the roads will be impassable, it's up to them.)"
