The whole Philippines was shocked when tour guide and activist Carlos Celdran spent a few hours in jail for disrupting an ecumenical service in Manila Cathedral on September 3, 2010. reports that Celdran, who was garbed as the martyred hero Jose Rizal, stood in front of the church’s main altar and shouted at the priests to stop getting involved in politics while waving a placard that read “Damaso.” This was in response to the church’s strong stand against the passage of the RH bill, which was passed into law shortly before 2012 ended.

The verdict on Celdran’s case was announced on January 28, 2013, more than a couple of years after the incident. Metropolitan Trial Court Judge Juan Bermejo Jr. had given the outspoken activist to a jail term of two months to one year for violating the religious feelings of Catholics.

Several personalities had since voiced out their opinions on Celdran’s quandary. Some said he didn’t deserve his punishment, and that he was merely exercising his right to free speech. There were also people who said that what he did was quite disrespectful, and that other religions wouldn’t tolerate what he did.
