Last year, Times Square officials made sure to install 13 lucky charms alongside the huge 2013 sign above Times Square just so the one billion people, give or take, who watched the ball drop on New Year’s Eve wouldn’t be scared off by the superstition of unlucky 13.
Here in the Philippines, we are not that much different. From feng shui bracelets to Arowana decors, Filipinos love to purchase anything that might bring them better luck. A visit to Yin Yang Charms & Feng Shui Store along Carriedo more than substantiated this, as the place was filled with people looking at charms and falling in line to get their yearly forecast. Considering the supposedly auspicious year, it’s probably not that big of a surprise.
Of course, this shouldn't be used as an excuse for not striving hard this year. Besides, according to co-owner and feng shui consultant Manny Chua, while each person may need a specific charm, there are some generic amulets or coins that may counter negativity or enhance luck.
