The ancient Greeks were on to something good when they started covering their breads with oils, cheese, and herbs. This method of preparing bread was actually the forerunner of pizza. A few centuries later, in 1989, pizza as we know it was invented when Queen Margherita of Italy ordered a pie made in the colors of her country. We know now the pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and basil leaves as the Margherita!

History lesson aside, almost everyone has had at least one slice of pizza in their lives. This dish has become as diverse as the people who make and eat it! Plus, it's easy to eat and great to share, which is why it's a party staple!
