If there’s a single person who can be blamed for the widespread fame of the cosmopolitan, it’s probably Carrie Bradshaw of the novel-turned-TV series Sex and The City. The cosmo was Ms. Bradshaw’s signature drink for a long time, only to abandon it when the rest of the ladies in town hopped on the cosmo bandwagon.
Despite the withdrawal of Carrie’s patronage, the cosmopolitan still remained as one of the most popular ladies’ drinks around the world, notes Kat Nantes of Paire Cocktails and Pastries. Read on to learn more about this classy drink!
What’s in a Cosmopolitan?
According to the International Bartenders’ Association, the basic cosmopolitan is composed of vodka, fresh lime juice, cranberry juice, and triple sec, an orange-flavored liqueur. “Cointreau is the brand of triple sec usually used, but you can substitute it instead with a dash of orange juice,” says Kat.
How do you prepare a Cosmopolitan?
The cosmo is an easy cocktail that can take less than five minutes to prepare. Combine all the ingredients together in an ice-filled shaker, strain the drink into a cocktail glass, and enjoy. Garnish your drink by putting a lime slice on the side of the glass for extra flair.
How many Cosmopolitans can a girl with an average alcohol tolerance take before she should stop?
Kat estimates that a girl can drink four cosmos before she starts feeling the drink’s effect. However, it’ll still depend on the amount of alcohol used. A higher amount of vodka in the drink would, of course, knock a lady out much quicker.
How many calories are there in a Cosmopolitan?
There are around 213 calories in a four-ounce cosmo.
What kind of girl would typically go for a Cosmopolitan?
Kat recommends this drink for outgoing, fashion-savvy trendsetters who like to stand out from the rest of the margarita-ordering crowd. “Like Carrie Bradshaw,” she says.
