Millions of pets are abandoned all over the world each year, and according to a study done in the US by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, pet owners eventually relinquish pets to shelters due to a myriad of reasons.

The study lists cost of pet maintenance, allergies, no time for pets, too many pets in home, and landlord issues among other reasons why pet owners decide to leave their animal companions behind. These are all situations that can be prevented if people put a lot of thought and research into adopting pets, rather than bringing them home on a whim.

If you’ve been toying with the idea of adopting a pet just to follow some trend, take some time to go through FN’s list of things to consider before getting an animal pal just so you’ll know how serious pet ownership is. And with October, which is also Adopt-a-Dog Month, coming up, this is a great way to decide whether or not you should get a fur (or fish or feathered or scaled) baby.
