Hi Doc Lelet! My son was already 14 months old when he was given the MMR and V vaccine. Ok lang ba na the varicella vaccine was given 2 months late? Also, I'm a bit confused because as per the Philippine Pediatric Society, the 2nd dose should be given between 4-6 years of age pero my son's pediatrician wants to do it in 3 months' time. Should we do it that soon or is it better to wait?

I appreciate your help. Thank you! :)

@mrsamurao:
As per CDC recommendations, the 2nd dose of both the MMR and varicella vaccines may be given ahead of the 4 to 6 years of age recommendation, provided it is given at least 3 months after the 1st dose. This is usually done if there is increased risk of exposure to the 4 diseases. Please ask your pedia regarding his reason for wanting to give the vaccines early.
No problem regarding the 2 month delay with regards to the 1st dose.

Though I believe it's better late than never, malaki ba nag chances na magkaroon kami ng problema? Many thanks. -Mommy Heart

@mommyheart:
Since they were not able to complete the necessary doses, then it makes them at risk for the infection since possible na hindi enough ang antibody production nila. The infection may be milder than usual, though.

Sorry haven't 'backread' yet. At what age does the baby get its first vaccine? Pwede bang 9 months old onwards na?

http://www.sunherb.com/truth_about_vaccines.htm

Sounds deadly though.

^^BCG is given shortly after birth. Please don't rely on a single 'health' website with regard to information about vaccines. There are a lot of misinformation out there. Read articles which cite their sources, and are based on credible studies.

Vaccines do have risks and side effects. If you have concerns, it is best to discuss these with your pediatrician, then you can make an informed decision. It is up to you to weigh the risk of side effects vs the advantage of protecting your child from deadly infectious diseases.

You can also use this forum to raise your concerns. Dr Lelet (leletmd) has been very helpful in enlightening us (she provides us information that sometimes our pedias forget or miss telling us)--as you can see, this topic has reached part 9. :)

doc lelet nagpavaccine ang anak ko ng 5 in 1 nung  july 3 s health center, then next dose niya s aug 7. kailan ko pwede ipavaccine yung rotavirus and pcv sa pedia nya? wala kasi sa center yun. sabi kasi sa jacob's ladder dapat may 1 month interval ang pag vaccine... edi ibigsabihin.. need niya tapusin yung 3 doses ng 5 in  1 sa center bago magpa vaccince ng rota at pcv?

ano po pala ang 5 in 1 vaccine na binibigay sa center? ano ang pinagkaiba nun sa 6 in 1?

thanks!

@contented:
Filipino children are required to have 1 dose of the Measles vaccine at 6 to 9 months of age, plus 2 doses of the MMR vaccine so talagang 3 doses ang kailangan ng Measles vaccine.
In other countries, walang measles vaccine at 9 months of age kasi matagal bago nawawala ang maternal measles antibodies. Sa Filipino infants, studies show that maternal measles antibodies wane faster, making them susceptible to the measles infection below 1 year of age. Kapag nagka-measles below 1 year of age, susceptible ang bata na magkaroon ng Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and all other infections.

@cookerbel:
Vaccine age recommendations are mostly based on studies on maternal antibodies. The vaccines given early are the antibodies that wane fast or are not passed on from mother to child like Diphtheria, Pertussis, tetanus, pneumococcus, hib, etc. Delaying vaccinations increases the risk of your child from developing these deadly infections.
Vaccines undergo several clinical trials before it is released in the market. It takes years before these trials are completed (example, it has been 15 years since they first started with the Dengue vaccine trials and they are not yet finished at this point) .Even after release, there are several post surveillance studies being made to monitor response/efficacy as well as safety, leading to new recommendations later on.
Sure, there are risks and side effects. Most of these adverse reactions, however, are nothing compared to the deadly complications of the actual disease. Because of these vaccines, our children need not suffer from whooping cough, from polio, from deadly measles...
I urge you to take a look at all of the diseases/infections that the vaccines protect our children from so you know what your child is at risk for if you choose not to vaccinate.

Here's a good example:

http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2013/06/06/3776327.htm

@enseyak:
The 1st dose of the rotavirus vaccine has to be given before the child reaches 14 weeks and 6 days so you cannot wait for the completion of the 3rd dose of the 5 in 1 vaccine at the health center before having this given. Ask your health center if it is ok to have the 5 in 1 vaccine given every other month rather than monthly para maibigay yung rotavirus vaccine in between.
6 in 1 vaccine given at private clinics contains DaPT, Polio, Hib and hepatitis B vaccines
Better to ask the local health center regarding the contents of their 5 in 1 since it could either be:
DPT, polio and Hib or
DPT, Hib and hepatitis B

@blood_siren:
Babies are supposed to be given BCG and the 1st dose of hepatitis B at birth. There is a law mandating that all babies should be given the 1st dose of the hepatitis B vaccine at birth to protect babies from the disease in case the mother was hepatitis B positive and didn't know it.
Please try to back read since I posted the link on the Philippine Pediatric Society recommendation on immunization. It contains the # of doses needed as well as the recommended schedule.

Hi Doc Lelet, i need your inputs po please.
My daughter kasi is 3.6yrs old now. Wala pa sya booster because of financial struggles din. Aside from flu vaccine last summer ang huling vaccine nya was first shot of MMR way back 2011 pa ata.
Now po kasi may PCV na inooffer dito sa office with much cheaper. If ever first shot ng PCV ito for my daughter.
Gusto ko sana makumpleto ang boosters nya kaya lang di ko alam baka masyado na late for her?
Please need your suggestions po.
Thanks so much in advance..

@essielle:
Since you are Hepatitis B positive, it is recommended that your baby gets the 1st shot of Hepatitis B vaccine and 1 dose of hepatitis B immunoglobulin at birth. This will help protect your baby so that he or she will have antibodies to fight the hepatitis B infection in case he or she got your infection. I am sorry that I do not know the exact cost of the hepatitis B immunoglobulin. Perhaps you can ask your OB or you can ask the hospital where you are suppose to give birth in regarding the cost.
Also, aside from the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine, your child needs to get 3 other doses of hepatitis B vaccine. One dose lang ang hepatitis B immunoglobulin and kailangan maibigay ito before 1 week of age.

@stormy_princess:
You can still have your daughter immunized with PCV. Since she is over 2 years of age, 1 dose na lang ng PCV ang kailangan niya.
Never ever too late to catch up with immunization. Kahit adults pwedeng pwede mag-catch up.
At 4 to 6 years of age: she needs the 2nd dose of MMR, 2nd dose of Varicella (assuming she got the 1st dose at 1 year of age), and the 2nd booster of the DaPT and Polio (assuming she got the 1st booster at 1 1/2 years of age).

SALAMAT po in advance doc.  :)

@tzikenn and jefsie10:
Please ask your pedias regarding their preferred vaccine intervals since they may have their own reasons for doing so.
