prob ko lang now, since am pregnant and so undependable... I can't enrol my son in Kindermusik or Gymboree... ang layo din samin ng Kids Ahoy Toddler Class... I really want him sana to have art/music/p.e. class for the interaction and skills

i am really not bent on him learning academics (though as kids are wont to do, he learns naman even if we don't actively try) this early... kaya din now that am coming up with a slightly more structured routine, activities am thinking of are all about improving development (hand dexterity, hand to eye coordination, body coordination) and fostering skills on hygiene, grooming, interaction...

very disappointed with SOT.my 6 yr old son was treated like a 6th grader. dahil marunong magbasa binigyan lang ng test booklet to answer. i was hoping that they will make the whole process comfortable for my son, who does not want to go to school(kaya ko nga i-homeschool). he was going through the test on his own, just like the grown-ups. he wasn't able to finish the test, tinawag ako nung nag pa-test, [textspeak!] my son was crying. so i rushed inside, di man lang ako binigyan ng time to calm my son first, kinakausap na ko agad about the test. tapos nung ok na kid ko, the lady named desiree, asked him to read a paragraph. dahil daw he can read grade 1 na nga daw dapat, mabore daw kid ko sa pre-school level. di na natapos lahat ng tests, pero i paid 1k. sabi sakin i-ok na nya sa grade 1 kid ko. pay na lang daw ako sa bank ng fees, tapos once paid schedule nila yung orientation. before we went down to pay the DT fee, i asked her for the total ng babayaran thru bank, andun daw yun sa binigay nila na papel(its an info sheet ng LHA) andun nga pero i was hoping na merong invoice man lang as basis ng payment ko.besides wala naman yung fees for the books dun. tapos i got a call from desiree this week, [textspeak!] nag email ako for a formal billing(nagreply naman sila), tapos sa phone conversation na yun nalaman ko na dapat daw yung magturo attend din ng orientation(for me [textspeak!] ako and mama ko magconduct ng lessons) tapos she stressed na dapat may nakatutok, i told her im working, what time ko daw maturuan and how many hours in a day. i throw her back the question, sabi ko usually how many hours ba kailangan, sabi nya just like sa regular school around 7 hrs(hello! grade 1, 7hrs?!) so natapos phone conversation namin na turned off na ko. tapos after around 5 mins, she called again, sabi daw nung kung sino man yun, i have to bring my son again dun for another test para ma ok na sya sa grade 1. (impossible yun na sumama pa son ko dun) tska why did she said OK to me nung andun kme kung di naman pla sya ang may authority. Hay!

I'm a homeschooling mom. Wow! all I can say is, wow! My 5 year old is enjoying every bits of it.  Natutuwa ako kasi nung typhoon, we decided not to do school dahil wala naman school din ang pre-school for 2 days.

Lagi akong ginagambala and asking me na mag school daw kami.  He loves school so much and truly enjoying it.  I pulled him out of regular school because, we feel we're dragging him to go to school before. But, now... he loves it soo much.

We got our 1 year curriculum at Sonlight (www.sonlight.com) for age 4-5.  Then I bought some additional materials like Singapore Math and Handwriting w/o Tears (www.hwtears.com).  We'll be enrolling him for taekwondo and hip hop dance.

We start school at 9:30am - 11:30pm tapos na.   So, after ng school niya, work na ako. Yes, I'm a work-at-home mom! with 6-mos old twins!

At night for bed, we'd read chapter books (sawa na siya sa picture books, for kids lang daw yun).

Homeschool is a discipline, but you reap the benefits of instilling a love for learning for your kids w/o the pressure of needing to cope with regular schools.

Hi. My husband and I are very much interested sa homeschooling. We plan to homeschool our 2 kids. Both are in Elementary level. One thing that bothers me is that, from what I've heard, there are High schools and Colleges/Universities who do not accept homeschooled students. Are you aware of this? If so, is this true? Do you happen to know the name of the Schools/Universities that do not accept homeschooled students?

Kasi we are planning sana to homeschool them sa Elementary level. Im worried na baka hindi sila tanggapin sa traditional School if we decide to transfer them na. Please help.

@sis sweet angel - yes, pina ship ko siya and may tax siya dito.  Depends ang tax sa total na purchase mo.  Since my father in law is a customs broker, nag pa compute nako so I know what to expect.  For me, kung suma-total kaya the shipping and taxes are okay (since inexpect kona yun, altho, next time ipabalikbayan box ko lang para $60 lang), dahil ang shipping and taxes is lumalabas na parang pang school bus + baon kona sa 1 year nung nag schooll ang anak ko. hehe... ganun din.

Kasi guaranteed ako sa Fedex, yun lang ang inisip ko.  Wala lang kasing uuwi galing US nung time na inorder ko. Kasi (7k tax + P5.5k fedex) din umabot.

@sis mama_femme - I've a lot of friends who have homeschooled their kids, some till HS pa.  Lahat ng mga anak nila, are in DLSU - Manila. Lahat sila, passed all UAAP entrance exams.  That's the very basic idea I want to homeschool my son (I hope carry ko till HS! haha! pero carry naman daw e) kasi I can save more for their college and yet they're getting good education that will strengthen them for college.

But, pulling out an elementary student who is used to regular school is much harder than when you start na pre-school pa lang.  You'll have to talk it out to your kids na i-pupull out mo and they have to agree with your family's decision bec they might retaliate and mahirapan ka lang, more so sila. The 1st year is usually the hardest for HS but along the way, you'll get the hang of it.

hi sis... kumusta na to? i mean, did you bring your son back? did you ask SOT for an explanation? my friend kasi homeschools with them and enrolled din ata sa Grade 1 ang anak nya right now... she has nothing but good words for SOT so I was leaning towards SOT din...so I sure hope your issue will be rsolved na hindi ka na-turn off diba...

no, di ko na binalik dun. ill probably just ask them if my son can still finish the test sa bahay, di na dun sa kanila. coz i know my son can breeze through it kung comfortable lang sya. sayang din kase yung 1k na fee for the DT. papatapos ko muna sa kid ko yung preschool books nya. math kame these days medyo hate nya ang math kaya matagal. yung science two days lang. yun lang he skipped the coloring parts. im considering victory elijah, madali sila kausap. ang OK naman sa SOT first year lang malaki babayaran, succeeding years mura na, parang books and minimal tuition fee na lang.

Homeschooling has been my conviction even way before I got married. Now, I'm independently homeschooling my preschooler, utilizing an eclectic system that mostly leans towards the Waldorf style.

I'm also homeschooling my 3.6 year old daughter. I don't really consider it schooling since we are just playing. She learned to count in one-to-one correspondence with her as the Store Owner and I as her customer. I'll order a specific item to her, in a particular color and number. Or I'll write down my order and read it to her; she learned the number symbols this way.

As for reading, I'm focusing more on phonics rather than on whole word reading. I started teaching her phonics at 3.4 age, so this means that I'm not a fan of Your Baby Can Read Program (teaching babies to read at a few months age using the whole word technique) Now, she can read early reader books phonetically, and acquiring sight words/whole words naturally through reading these early reader books. She grasped consonant blends and digraphs quickly because of her foundation in phonics. Right now, I'm finding ways on how to teach her silent e and other long vowels principles. I'm thinking on how to present these principles to a toddler in easiest way possible.

Hindi ako nagfa-flashcard. Hindi rin ako nagpapa-exam sa anak ko ng worksheets. The reason for this is that at her age, she still doesn't have the attention span needed to answer complicated tests, plus the fact that she can't write yet. Hindi ko siya pinipilit magsulat kasi hindi pa naman developmentally ready ang mga preschoolers sa writing. There are other ways to enhance or practice fine motor skills other than writing, like cutting and stringing of beads.

Eto yung inaayawan ko sa traditional preschools. Kahit hindi pa ready magsulat ang bata, pinipilit magsulat. Tapos katakut-takut pa ang exam at mga subjects, akala mo yung curriculum pang neurologists or rocket scientists. Sa totoo lang, during preschool years, mas maiging tayong magulang nalang ang magturo kesa ipasok sa mamahaling preschool. Mas matututo ang anak natin nang walang kahirap-hirap.

@sis miksha - yes, you can do homeschooling anywhere as long as you commit to 4 or 5x a day of teaching your kids.  I homeschool even when we're in the beach for a 5 day vacation.  As long as you have the curriculum followed, and they are learning - that should be good.

Minsan nga, I homeschool at a coffee shop or park pag nakaka bore na sa house lang.  You see, homeschooliing doesn't necessarily mean sa home lang din, it could be anywhere you or your child feels like it.

Parang ang sarap i-homeschool yung mga kiddos kaso it would entail a LOT of discipline, which I don't have. hehe. And habol ko rin kasi interaction ng daughter ko with other kids since siya lang ang bata dito.

We are seriously considering a homeschool provider for our daughter but it turns out it is NOT DEP-ED ACCREDITED. Are any of you independently homeschooling your kids (your homeschool provider is not DepEd accredited)? What assurances did they give you about problems that may arise when your child applies for college... or when you decide that you want your child to go to a regular school, say in high school?

I am independently homeschooling my kid who is at pre-school level.  I got it from the US.  It is Sonlight.com.  Literature-based curriculum and I feel it works well with the learning style of my child rather than yung paces type (worksheet style).

I got this idea from a veteran homeschooling mom.  She homeschooled her son during his elementary days who went to La Salle in Canlubang (since they're from Sta Rosa) and now is in La Salle Taft for College.

Not Deped recognized, but she gave report cards she personally recorded.  Which I also practice for my son.  They gave her son an entrance exam and he passed naman.

I am not worried about homeschooling kung DepEd recognized siya (since, madami naman schools who are not anyway), mas important for me is the curriculum and whether the homeschool curriculum is the best fit for the learning style of my child and of course if it is flexible enough for me for my family.

Madaming homeschool choices like Charlotte Mason, Sonlight, TMA and School of Tomorrow.

It takes patience kaya dapat full time mom ka talaga. Otherwise, ipa regular school mo nalang kung hindi ka din makakatutok. Or let your child go to a montessori-based school.  The 1st year is the hardest.

it could even be your best option kasi you need not find schools as you country hop   you just have to enrol them in a really good one


I will be most likely enrolling my son in a waldorf day care for the socialization thing but we're not enrolling in a homeschooling institution yet for academics... I am also leaning towards a waldorf/Montessori style type of learning so I don't mind delaying academics
