^I thought once diagnosed with autism forever na yun, pero nai-improve ang quality of life through therapy.  In your nephew's case, nagamot sya?  Or mis-diagnosed lang with ASD?
previously kasi (7/2010), his pedia's diagnosis was ASD, he was near to 3y/o then, about 2yrs9months. sabe naman ng pedia, possible pa na ma-rule out because he is not yet 3. but we have to be prepared (emotionally, financially, etc). then we went for rigourous OT (2 to 3 times a week), after 3 months, his improvement was very vast. he can already speak (1-2 word sentence, knows the basic action words, alphabet, color, animal and their sounds, etc), and symptoms has really went out, like lining of toys, etc.
he was then dismissed kasi nga he passed all the basic test given by the pedia. he was asked several tasks eh, he was able to do it. he is very good pa nga sa puzzles. there is one part that he has to name different pictures, so happened we also use flash cards to teach him to speak and identify, almost same ginawa nila, nasagot nya most of it. and sabe ng doctor, had it not been intervened immediately, it would not be resolved. his diagnosis now is developmental language delay.
hindi kasi ako kasama nung first check up but i saw it on the paper, even the symptoms written were very applicable to him. we were so blessed that these are things of a past. siguro talagang early intervention is the key to help kids whose development is nearing palang sa spectrum.

we had my son's evaluation last friday. he was diagnosed with global developmental delay with actions (jumping, flapping of hands and fixation sa letters and numbers) that make autism highly probable. he was recommended to take OT 2x a week for 4 months.

mga sis, sa tingin iyo ba may pag-asa anak ko na makahabol?

^ How old is your son?  Generally, mas madaling mag-catch up habang mas bata pa siya.  The golden years for therapy are 1-5 years old as I've read here or in the other thread before.

The key is to find a very good OT, attend the OT sessions consistently and follow up the therapy with the home program/activities for the home recommended by the OT. :P

^i agree with sis marose. the earlier the intervention, the better. i also feel good that my pamangkin's OT teachers are good and warm. follow up also at home.

be hopeful sis, but don't think naman na because of his condition, hindi na kayo magdadagdag ng anak. actually sabe nga ng pedia na nakausap ko, it is better for a kid to have siblings para mas magkaroon siya ng kasama/kausap, which adds to his emotions. also, expose him to playgroups and playgrounds. we were asked to reduce TV exposure also.

^oo nga pala, that was also a must. one language lang muna. if he is aware of it, then that is the time na pwede na turuan ng other language. :)

^ sis im happy okay na pamangkin mo. I remember sabi ng pedia nmin yung batang sobrang tutok sa tv and with less interaction with peopleit causes an autism like syndrome. She had a patient na ganun daw delayed talker then pinacheck sa dev pedia ,what the lolo did , he plaYS. teach and talk to the child often, naging maayos namn daw.

hindi talga maganda over exposed sa tv, kaso minsan kasi the only time you can do other things eh kapag may kid program na nakasalang like rhymes and the likes.

^from my observation, they have systematized play, which the child needs to focus and interact. sa mga nakita ko, this is their usual routine (first 3 months):
1. opening song with action
2. massage or rigorous play like wheel borrow or bouncing ball
3. activity which the child has to follow certain instructions as follows, e.g.
     a. get puzzle
     b. jump on mat with open/close feet etc
     c. slide
     e. ride car
     f. build puzzle
4. fine motor skills activities like threading, using screws
5. activities that will visual or memory skills like use of pictures, puzzles etc.

after their OT, the teacher talks to us with his notes on what their activities are and how the child responded. if there are skills or activities that the child seems to be lacking, then you have to work on it at home. we also try the systematized play at home where the child has to follow certain instructions, similar to their OT. as the child progresses, rigorous play is replaced by different activities like coloring, tracing, drawing, etc. this is just based on my experience, seeing my nephew on his OT every week.

sis, how old is your nephew? anong case ng nephew nyo? my son kasi 17mos old almost the same nga ang ginagawa kaso since my son is just 17mos old di daw niya nasusunod ang structured activities pero nagagawa daw naman daw ng son ko ang lahat na activities with support kasi di pa kaya ng son ko mag isa just to be safe sa case ng son ko. after weeks of ot wala pa akong nakikitang progress sa son ko siguro dahil he is still young. delayed talker siya

actually, dev ped niya ang nagsuggest na ipa ot para daw magkaroon muna ng focus bago anf speech theraphy. yon na nga sa napapansin ko alanganin pa talaga siya sa ot kasi nga baby pa talagang di pa siya makafocus ng matagal sa isang activities. in 3weeks na niyang session parang i dont see any improvements. basides financially draining talaga. 3mos siyang mag ot. iyakan blues pa nga lagi pagkinukuha sa akin ng ot teacher niya.

^ Joyce, mas effective ang OT if you follow up with activities at home.  Has the OT recommended specific activities to be done at home?

1 and a half months na si baby ko na nag-OT and Im so thankful na since yesterday na session nya eh di na sya umiiyak. actually nung una feeling ko wala maging improvement dahil nga sa puro [textspeak!] cya iyak pero what i like lang about sa OT is that i can get pointers...

sabi ng oT ni baby is laki daw improvement kaagad ng baby ko and maganda ang processing nya...sana talaga sa sunod na check-up nya is mas maganda ang kalabasan.

^nung una din sis, naiyak yung pamangkin ko. kasi syempre, naninibago pa yung bata. hindi naman niya kilala yung OT teacher niya and yet kelangan niya makasama sa activity, kaya talagang iiyak ang bata sa una. pero once na may bonding na sila, ma-ge-gain na ng OT Teacher yung trust ng bata and the child may enjoy their company already. :)

My daughter is turning 19 months on the 2nd. I 'm a little worried kasi she can only say few words clearly. Like mama, papa, anya (her kuya), nana (my mom) and baba (ba-bye). She can understand simple directions like kiss, give, hug, etc. And when she watch brainy babies ABC, she tries to imitate the letter sounds. We always talks to her and read books to her naman kaya mejo nag-aalala ako why until now konti pa din ang vocabulary nya. Considered delayed talker na ba sya?
