Walking in wet shoes can be a bummer because it feels gross, your feet may smell gross, and it shortens your footwear's lifespan. It's best to carry an extra pair of flip-flops, rain boots, or jelly flats to keep your feet and your more delicate shoes protected from the rain. But of course, the weather is unpredictable, and sometimes, getting drenched is inevitable. When that happens, here are the things you should do to make sure your shoes survive the ordeal.

1. Do damage control.
When your shoes get soaking wet because of heavy downpour, stuff them with crumpled newspaper as soon as you take them off. The paper absorbs the water, hastening the drying process. Blow-drying them won’t do any good because the heat may only alter the leather’s condition or weaken the glue.

2. Say no sto stinky feet.
Prevent your shoes from getting stinky by dusting baking soda inside. Baking soda naturally absorbs bad odors. Store in a well-ventilated place.

3. Try this DIY solution.
Restore your white leather sneakers’ flashy glory by spraying them with equal parts lemon juice and water and leaving them to dry somewhere sunny. DO NOT leave them under direct sunlight because this may crack the leather.

4. Do surface cleaning.
Canvas and cloth shoes with mud marks should be surface cleaned first before being soaked in warm, soapy water. Never throw them in the washer because this will destroy the glue that binds the shoes.

5. Don't forget to exercise aftercare.
As soon as your leather shoes are dry, condition them with a leather polish to restore their shine.
