Washing your clothes is basic: You always want your threads looking clean and smelling fresh. But unknown to many, you can actually underdo or go overboard with the laundry. When you seldom wash an item, bacteria will grow (yuck!) and it will begin to smell, but when you wash it too often, you’ll risk shortening its life span. The general rule is that if you’ve sweated bullets in them, throw them in the hamper, but for items that don’t require frequent washing, simply hang them in a well-ventilated area to let them naturally deodorize. See our fuss-free guide below:

After every wear
• Panties, knickers, and boxer-briefs
• Socks, stockings, and tights
• Sportswear and swimwear

One to two wears
• Tops
• Dresses
• Leggings

Three to four wears
• Bras
• Trousers, skirts, and shorts
• Pajamas

Five to six wears
• Jackets and blazers
• Jeans. You can also follow Levi's CEO Chip Bergh’s advice. Last year, he dropped a bomb that shook the denim world: Don’t wash your jeans if you want them to last. To kill bacteria and odors, place them in a resealable plastic bag and put it in the freezer.
