It takes some real commitment to hold on to your dye job, regardless if it's a natural shade of brown or platinum blonde. But if you're willing to do the work, the end result will be everything you hope for.

So what is it that you need to do exactly? Ahead, we have a guide from Joe Almakdesi, creative director of Basement Salon Rockwell:

1. Choose the right shampoo and conditioner.

Caring for colored hair isn't as simple as keeping your virgin locks in check. To keep your strands from looking brassy, switch to a shampoo and conditioner combo specifically targeted towards your type of hair. Opting for sulfate-free shampoos can be a great start, since these are generally gentler than most formulas and helps minimize fading. The right conditioner depends on how much nourishment your hair needs, but it's important to use it every time you wash your locks.

2. Use a hair treatment at least once a week.

Healthy hair is always a great canvas for any color. Aside from using hair oils and conditioner, Joe recommends keeping yours moisturized by using a hair mask (either store-bought or DIY is fine!) once a week. Think of it as a spa treatment for your strands that'll make your color appear more vibrant and free it of that dry, brittle look.

3. Get a hair gloss treatment.

A month is too soon for a new round of hair color, so if you want to refresh your dye job around that time frame, Joe recommends a hair gloss treatment instead. This semi-permanent treatment will help revive your last color, get rid of the unsightly parts, and best of all, add a shine to your hair that it might've lost since your last salon visit.

4. Have your hair trimmed every few weeks.

"A trim every four to six weeks will keep the hair healthy and help it 'breathe'," explains Joe. It will have your color looking fresh every time, too, since it won't be plagued by frizz and split ends.

5. See a professional colorist.

High-quality coloring products yield high-quality results, so it's definitely in your best interest to have your strands dyed by a pro who has access to it. Joe then adds that professional hair color products last longer and leave a shiny, healthy finish to the hair compared to commercially available box dyes.
