In this case, we're here to tell you the safe and effective solutions to help you score your skincare goals. We already wrote the best acne treatments so we made this guide that discusses how to fade the marks breakouts leave behind. Before we get to the remedies, let's talk about the types of acne scars first. Some appear as red or dark spots, while there are scars that are deep or pitted.

That said, the products or treatments that you must try depends on the scar's severity. If the mark is superficial, you're good with brightening serums and toners you buy at the department store. But if you're dealing with deep scars, you may have to get an in-clinic procedure.

Below, we explain the most effective remedies and treatments to get rid of acne scars.

(Ed's note: It's always best to consult a dermatologist first and never self-medicate.)

1. Acne Scars Remedy and Treatment: Niacinamide

When you’re dealing with dark spots and marks, you need a brightening ingredient in your routine—niacinamide, in particular. It regulates sebum production (bye, future zits!) and evens out pigmentation. You tackle the source and the aftermath in one go! (You can learn more about niacinamide here.)

2. Acne Scars Remedy and Treatment: AHA and BHA

If you haven’t explored the world of AHAs and BHAs, you are missing out a lot! AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) are made from fruit extracts, and they help resurface new skin cells. They come in the form of glycolic, lactic, mandelic, and citric acid. BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids), on the other hand, go deep into the pores and dislodge dirt, sebum, and dead skin cells. Look for salicylic or citric acid in the label. (Basically, AHA brightens and BHA treats zits and polishes the skin. Here’s a primer on how to properly exfoliate your skin.)

4. Acne Scars Remedy and Treatment: Sunscreen

No matter how amazing your skincare lineup is but if you never apply sunscreen, all your efforts will go to waste. Protecting your skin from UV rays can help prevent acne scars and dark spots. Please wear SPF before going out of the house or even if you’re just indoors. (We talk more about it here.)

5. Acne Scars Remedy and Treatment: Rejuvenating Sets

Okay, the use of rejuvenating sets is controversial because some are too harsh on the skin or made with questionable ingredients. Before purchasing one, research first. (You can check out our in-depth investigation here.) Read the ingredients and find out if registered with the FDA. Here’s one that we recommend that won’t sting or cause harsh peeling but still deliver glass-skin results.

6. Acne Scars Remedy and Treatment: Chemical Peels

You can take your acne-scar treatments up a notch by getting a professional chemical peel. It makes use of exfoliating acids (see AHAs and BHAs category above) of higher concentration. The solution lifts dead skin and impurities. It also helps fade pigmentation. This procedure targets acne and the scars they leave behind. It may require downtime to heal.

7. Acne Scars Remedy and Treatment: Laser Resurfacing

While laser treatments won’t necessarily get rid of the scar, but it can make deep scars and rough texture less noticeable. It also reduces the appearance of large pore size and boosts collagen production. For five to seven days, you may notice tiny white scars and redness. You’ll need at least five sessions to see results.

8. Acne Scars Remedy and Treatment: Air-dissection and Laser

For deep scars—box and icepick—you can restore the skin’s smooth texture with professional resurfacing treatments. You can try the Belo Time Capsule that makes use of Air-Dissector technology which is basically injecting air by the use of microneedles on the face. Afterward, fractional laser treatment is done to promote skin renewal. To stimulate repair, the doctor applies EGF serum and you wear an INARA LED mask. Expect seven to 10 days of downtime—your skin will turn red and become swollen. You’ll need three sessions to see results. (Read our full review and see the before-and-after pictures here.)
