Blush seems like one of those makeup products that's hard to mess up. You just apply it on the apples of your cheeks and you're good to go, right? But it's actually quite tricky—it requires practice to score a healthy, natural-looking flush.

Ahead, we listed down the common blush mistakes and how you can correct them to score that gorgeous wash of color:

1. You put cream over powder.

Cream blushes are currently enjoying their moment in the spotlight, and it's not hard to see why. They're easy to blend, and they lend your skin a beautiful dewy finish. When you, however, dab it after dusting your face with setting powder, you'll get a streaky application. You also run the risk of moving your base.

Solution: After applying your foundation and concealer, gently pat (not tug!) some blush on the apples of your cheeks and some on your nose (for that lovely drunk blush look). After that, you can dust setting powder. This is an especially useful tip for those with oily skin but still want to join in on the cream rouge bandwagon.

TRY: Sunnies Face Airblush, P445, Lazada

2. You don't use the correct tool.

Your fingers seem like the most obvious tool for applying blush, especially if it's a cream formula. The heat from your digits lets the product sink into your skin. But, you run the risk of transferring dirt from your hands to your face.

Solution: Use a dense, domed synthetic brush to make blending (and your life) easier. Just make sure to take your time so that you don't leave unsightly streaks on your face.

3. You're heavy-handed when applying the product.

Blush can go from a healthy-looking flush to clown-like in a matter of seconds, so it's important to go slow and not use a heavy hand during application.

Solution: When handling your brush, grasp it by the end (as opposed to the middle) so that only the head of the bristles are touching your cheek. This allows you to spread the blush without accidentally going overboard.

4. You don't take your face shape into account.

We know that blush is applied on the cheeks, but haphazardly applying it around that general area can actually cause it to look unflattering.

Solution: If you have an oval-shaped face, concentrate the color on the top your cheeks to make your face appear lifted. If it's square or heart-shaped, apply the rouge on the apples of your cheeks. Lastly, if you have a round-shaped face, focus the product on the sides of the cheeks to fake a contoured look.

5. You're using the wrong shade.

For example, a light pink blush might complement fair skin but will look ashy on medium and dark complexions. On the other hand, an orange- or berry-toned rouge will look stunning on dusky-toned girls but might look over-the-top on mestizas.

Solution: We've compiled a guide and product recommendations for light, medium, tan, and dark complexions here!

6. You choose a blush that doesn't suit your skin type.

Contrary to popular belief, blush is not a one-size-fits-all kind of product. The wrong formula can turn your complexion into a greasy mess at the end of the day or it can emphasize the appearance of fine lines and large pores.

Solution: If your skin is oily, powder blushes are your best bet. If your face has dry patches, a cream or gel formula is the way to go. If you have a normal skin type, lucky you-you can use anything your heart fancies!
