For a lot of women, a haircut is like a rite of passage. As Coco Chanel put it, "A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life." Here, six signs it’s time to set an appointment with your hairdresser.

1. When you break up with your BF
Or, you know, vice-versa. It doesn’t even matter who ended the relationship. Now that that chapter of your life is over, you need to start anew, and nothing helps you move on faster than a change of hair length. Think Basha in One More Chance, but less tita.

2. When you need a career boost
If Lesley Hornby hadn’t traded her medium-length locks for her signature Twiggy look, she would never have become the face of ‘60s androgyny. The same goes for Karlie Kloss, Meg Ryan, and Jennifer Aniston. Okay, so we’re not all celebrities, but you have to admit that a haircut, well, the right one anyway, can do a lot to build your confidence—confidence that’ll have your bosses sitting up and taking notice.

3. When you’re in a slump
Tired of following the same old routine? Change things up by going to the salon. A new haircut can make you feel like a different person and change the way you look at the world.

4. When you spot split ends
Choosing the right shampoo or taking proper care of your hair can help prevent split ends, but the easiest remedy is to just get a trim. Snip, snip, snip!

5. When you want to feel pampered
On days when you feel super stressed out, duck inside a grade-A salon and you’ll feel instantly better. It’s not just the air-conditioning, but the way they attend to your every whim, offer you a drink, and give you a scalp massage. For an hour or so, you'll feel like the most important person in the world.

6. When you want to open yourself up to people
For some women, hair acts like a shield or, according to Liz Jones of The Daily Mail, a "split-ended curtain behind which I could hide." But if you're tired of hiding, taking a pair of scissors to your hair is a good way to reintroduce yourself to society.

7. When you feel like it
And really, that’s a good enough reason!
