Winning Pinoy Dream Academy in 2006 launched singer Yeng Constantino's career in the music industry, and she's since gone on to bigger and brighter things. Today, she's a multi-platinum recording artist with a steady flow of music awards also coming her way every year. Just this March, she won five distinctions at the 2011 MYX Music Awards, including Song of the Year. Despite her success, however, Yeng reveals she went through a hard time two years ago when she felt like her career wasn't going in the right direction. In an October 12 interview with Boy Abunda on Bandila, Yeng talks about undergoing depression.
"Alam mo 'yon, Tito Boy, kilala mo yung sarili mo bilang isang musician, tapos parang naliliko ka sa isang direksyon na hindi mo masyadong gusto (You know, Tito Boy, it's like you know yourself as an artist, but you're going in a direction you don't really want to go)," she explains. "I hope nung time na 'yon nag-decide ako na, sana pala nagsalita ako. Pero at that time naisip ko, 'Hindi kaya parte 'to ng career ko, na kailangan kong mag-compromise?' (I wish I'd decided to speak up then. But at the time, I was thinking, 'Maybe this is all part of my career, that I have to compromise?)"
What saved her was the support of her friends, which include crush ng bayan Piolo Pascual and crooner Sam Milby. "Kilala nila kung ano akong artist, kung sino ako. Parang inencourage nila ako. (They know who I am as an artist, who I am as a person. It's like they encouraged me.)"
Now she's finally back on her feet, and she's just released a new album entitled Yeng Versions Live, which features live covers of Pinoy songs she grew up with. When Boy asks her how she's feeling right now, she answers with a smile: "Happy."
