solenn_heussaff.jpgNewcomer Solenn Huessaff is anxiously awaiting the reviews for her first movie out in theaters now, My Valentine Girls. In the film, she, Rhiann Ramos, Lovi Poe, and Eugene Domingo play Richard Gutierrez’s four love interests. “Sobrang kinakabahan ako (I’m very nervous),” the Survivor Celebrity Showdown castaway told PEP.ph. "Kasi siyempre naman, first acting gig ko, tapos I'm scared of all the critics. So, I'm kind of scared.”

Nevertheless, Solenn remained optimistic about the results and expressed her eagerness to improve. “[I] think I did a good job for my first movie, tapos walang training. Ngayon, I want to take more workshops and learn more about the craft."

Like Solenn, do you get anxious at the thought of receiving criticism? Before you have a panic attack, take a deep breath and read on. Handling criticism doesn’t need to be a painful experience, after all. Prepare yourself well for the onslaught ahead with these five useful tips from FN.

1. EXPECT THE WORST.

This doesn't mean you have to accept defeat even before anything happens. Just mentally condition yourself and enter the situation with low expectations. That way, you won’t be too emotionally invested if you get negative reactions regarding your work. Plus, if the results end up being positive, you'll feel twice as happy.

2. STAY CLOSE TO YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM.

There’s a difference between criticism and just plain bullying. Just in case the critics are detractors in disguise, make sure you’re surrounded by the people who love and understand you. They will be able to validate your strengths and assure you of what you're doing right.

3. CONSTANTLY SEEK TO IMPROVE YOURSELF.

Accept that you're not perfect and that there's always room for improvement. If you are aware of your capabilities and limitations, you'll be better equipped to accept what useful criticism will come your way. This also makes it easy for you to figure out when criticism given to you is actually a veiled personal attack.

4. ACCEPT THAT YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE.

There will always be people who won't like you or who will disagree with you, and there will always be criticism against you. The sooner you acknowledge this, the easier it will be for you to handle the negativity that comes from them. Remember that you are under no obligation to please others, much less everyone you meet. What’s more important is that you feel good about your work and know what you want to achieve with it.

5. GIVE YOURSELF SOME CREDIT.

Stay optimistic. Don't be afraid to compliment yourself and acknowledge your strengths, especially if you know that you really did a good job. If you don't believe in yourself, others will also have a hard time trusting you and your work. And if you let criticism pull you and your self-esteem down, you’ll become fair game for more detractors in the future.
