Only a few days have passed since the American Idol Season 10 contestants--including Pinay singer Thia Megia--held a two-night concert spree in the Philippines. The singing competition fever isn't over, though, as The X Factor US just premiered on FOX last night with a simulcast on local channel Studio 23. The show, which originated in UK, features four celebrity judges competing for the distinction of discovering the country's next singing sensation. In the UK edition, each mentor is tasked to train one of four categories of contestants: the girls, the boys, the groups, and the over 40s. Each judge's top three choices make it into the live shows as part of the final 12.
Simon Cowell, the show's creator and also one of its judges, says his goal is to make The X Factor US's ratings surpass that of any other singing competition. This includes American Idol (AI), which had him on the judges panel for nine seasons before he left the show in 2010.
"You don't compete for the silver or the bronze. You may not get the gold, but you die trying," he is quoted as saying on TMZ.com. "[The X Factor is] definitely going to be better than the other shows."
Besides Cowell, The X Factor's other judges include singer Nicole Scherzinger, record producer L.A. Reid, and former AI judge Paula Abdul. Singer and The X Factor UK judge Cheryl Cole will also appear as a guest mentor.
