making waves for a different reason: the national rugby team, AKA the Philippine Volcanoes, who showed off their tanned and toned physiques clad only in Bench Body underwear to raise awareness about their championship-winning team.
The Bench ads were featured on adjacent billboards along EDSA near the Guadalupe bridge. They were taken down last Friday after Mayor Benhur Abalos of Mandaluyong City requested their removal, PEP.ph reports. Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian of Valenzuela City first Tweeted about the news on July 7. "Good news! Just talked to Mayor Abalos of Mandaluyong. He ordered the removal of the 'men in briefs' billboard! Thank you, Mayor Abalos!" he said.
He followed it up with another Tweet detailing what Mayor Abalos told him: "Mayor Abalos: 'I personally investigated it, and I myself was shocked to see it! Thanks again!' Kudos Mayor Benhur Abalos!"
Mayor Abalos clarified the statement on ABS-CBNNews.com. "Hindi ko pinapaalis (I didn't order anyone to take them down), I am just requesting advertisers to have it removed," he is quoted as saying.
He said that the billboards were placed along a busy main road used by a lot of people and even worried about children who might have seen the ad. Mayor Abalos added, however, that his request to have the billboards removed wasn't an issue of morality.
