Azkal player Phil Younghusband expressed his love for football in an interview with PEP.ph. “Even when I am growing up, I always make sure that my priority is football. And without football, I wouldn't be here where I am now, and the public scene wouldn't be there without the football,” he said. Born and raised in England, Phil and his brother, James, have both been football fanatics since they were children. The two boys were already playing for the Chelsea youth team at 9 and 10 years of age. Phil eventually made it to the Chelsea reserve team, and a few years down the road, he and his brother were both recruited by the Philippine team.
In an interview for Collezione-C2, a clothing brand the brothers endorse, Phil revealed that finding his passion for football helped him figure out his goals in life. This is why he advises people not to give up when looking for theirs. “Your passion will motivate you, transform you, and, when used properly, even make a difference in others’ lives,” he shared.

1. LIST THE THINGS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN AND ARE GOOD AT.
Take some time to reflect about the things you like and enjoy doing. Jot these down, and rank them according to how much you like them and how good you are at doing them. Now go over your list, and ask yourself the following questions: Does this activity make you happy? Can you make a career out of this? Can you imagine yourself doing it for a long time, possibly the rest of your life? Do you think that, with time and effort, you can become an expert at it? A hobby could be your passion in disguise, so evaluate your options carefully.
2. EMBRACE YOUR FEARS; BE OPEN TO TRYING NEW THINGS.
If you’ve exhausted your current repertoire and you think you still haven’t found your passion, consider this: Are your fears holding you back from pursuing what you really want to do? Perhaps there’s something you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t yet done so because you feel you aren’t good enough to make it. Let go of your inhibitions, face your fears, and don’t let the opportunity pass you by. You’ll never know if you can succeed at something if you don’t even try.
3. CONSULT YOUR LOVED ONES.
Your loved ones know you best, so don’t be afraid to go to them for help. Ask them where they think your strengths lie and what they think you’re passionate about. Write their answers down and compare them with your own list. Do any of your entries match? If you find a similar result, you just might be looking at your passion in life. In the end, though, the decision to pursue something still lies with you, so only use your loved ones’ opinions as a gauge.
4. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
If you do find yourself leaning toward something in particular, make sure you learn as much as you can about it. You might not be looking at this hobby as a career right now, but you might be in the future, so just keep honing your skills. Read books, surf the net, and attend relevant seminars. More importantly, ask people who are already in the field about their lives and what they deal with on a daily basis. This way, you’ll have an inkling of the kind of lifestyle they have, and you’ll be able to judge for yourself whether or not you can handle it.
5. NEVER GIVE UP.
As Phil says, “Practice patience, because at the end of the day, when you discover what gets you going, it’s all going to be worth it.” Discovering and maintaining your passion takes a lot of work, so don’t give up at the first sign of discomfort. As author Greg Anderson says, “Focus on the journey, not the destination.” If you find yourself enjoying the process of finding your passion, chances are, you’re on your way to a fruitful result. How long it takes you to get there doesn’t matter; what matters is that you do.
