There was a collective gasp of shock last week when TIME.com released a report from the Minnesota Planetarium Society saying that the constellations have shifted due to the moon’s gravitational pull on Earth. “When [astrologers] say that the sun is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces,” says astronomer Park Kunkle. The news, which is actually 2000 years old, shows that because of this celestial “wobble,” astrologers have been reading the stars wrong by at least a month all along. Kunkle and his fellow astronomers brought people’s attention to the “neglected” 13th constellation, Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer, which was removed by the Babylonians to reduce the number of Zodiac signs to 12. Ophiuchus’s entry adjusts the Zodiac dates, which in turn causes changes in people’s star signs. Here is the new list of Zodiac dates from the Minnesota Planetarium Society:
Capricorn: January 20-February 16
Aquarius: February 16-March 11
Pisces: March 11-April 18
Aries: April 18-May 13
Taurus: May 13-June 21
Gemini: June 21-July 20
Cancer: July 20-August 10
Leo: August 10-September 16
Virgo: September 16-October 30
Libra: October 30-November 23
Scorpio: November 23-29
Ophiuchus: November 30-December 17
Sagittarius: December 17-January 20
Heated debates are still going on as to whether or not these new dates should be followed, especially since a report from CNN.com says that from the point of view of the Western Zodiac, the signs haven’t changed at all. “When we look at the astrology used in the Western world, the seasonally based astrology has not changed, was never oriented to the constellations,” Jeff Jawer, astrologer from Tarot.com, is quoted as saying.
Ophiuchus sign bearers are those born from November 30 to December 17. TIME.com says they are “known to take charge of any situation with wisdom and knowledge. They command the admiration of their peers and have big dreams for themselves.”
