For a lot of us, K-dramas are our go-to source of kilig. It's always a classic feeling when we swoon every time the two main leads in the drama engage in a heart-fluttering moment or when the second lead makes us question who we really ship in the story. But if you aren't really a fan of shows that heavily rely on romance to get the story going, the new K-drama Memorist might be right up your alley.

When we're in need of good vibes, K-dramas are really an instant picker-upper. While majority of the popular Korean dramas we know of are hyper-focused on romance, there's more to these shows than just kilig. There are plenty of K-dramas whose storylines explore other genres, like fantasy, historical, action, and mystery-and Memorist is one such show. If you're looking to embark on your first ever K-drama experience beyond the usual romantic tropes, give this new show a try. Here's what you need to know about the K-drama Memorist

Who stars in Memorist?

Yoo Seung Ho as Dong Baek

What is the K-drama Memorist about?

Memorist is crime thriller following the story of Dong Baek, a star detective who can read a person's memories whenever he touches them, and Han Sun Mi, a top profiler and the youngest senior superintendent in the country, as they work together in solving murder cases. The crime drama is actually based on a webtoon of the same name written by Jae Hoo.

While Memorist dabbles in the supernatural thanks to Dong Baek's telepathic powers, the execution of it tried to take a more scientific route to make Dong Baek's supernatural ability as grounded in reality as it can be. In the drama's first episode, Dong Baek is seen being tested and studied to figure out how his "powers" came to be. It was then explained that Dong Baek's ability will be considered a "supernatural power until science can prove otherwise." You'll also see the use of his telepathic ability used in creative ways to assist in solving crimes throughout the series.

Much like your go-to Western crime thrillers like NCIS and Elementary, the way Memorist tackles its cases will keep viewers at the edge of their seats. The first episode alone is fast-paced, already revealing a handful of clues that would help them connect the murder cases-some of which turned out to be misleading, which made for more interesting twists. Of course, it's not all suspense. There are moments of humor between the characters stitched here and there, which helps balance out the tension-filled plot of the series. The cherry on top would have to be the commendable chemistry between lead stars Yoo Seung Ho and Lee Se Young, whose characters seem to be vastly different from each other.

It isn't surpising to find that the drama has already received high ratings upon its premiere. As reported by Soompi, the series had already taken the first spot in its time slot for various cable channels in South Korea.

Where can I watch Memorist?

The K-drama is available for streaming on Viu. There are a total of 16 episodes in the drama, each lasting for approximately 60 minutes.  The drama is currently on going, with a new episode airing every week.
