mariel_rodriguez.jpgLast year saw a number of ups and downs for actress-TV host Mariel Rodgriguez. Her surprise marriage to Robin Padilla definitely raised a few eyebrows, but it was after rumors of her badmouthing fellow Kapamilya stars came out that she seemed to slowly slip away from the limelight.

PEP.ph
caught up with TV host Boy Abunda, who is also Mariel’s manager, after an episode of Showbiz News Ngayon (SNN). “She wants to come back,” he said when asked about his charge. “She wants to work. Pinag-iisipan lang. Pinagpaplanuhan lang na mabuti yung pagbabalik. (She’s just thinking about it. Planning her return carefully.) She knows she has to be very cautious. I mean, things have changed. Things are very different.”

Mariel has already started to make herself more visible online as she prepares to promote Tum: My Pledge of Love, her upcoming movie with Robin. Her Twitter page is full of messages to fans (“thank you for all your sweet tweets!!! miss you all too!!!! salamat!!!”). She also reached out to actress and TV host Toni Gonzaga whose friendship she lost after the badmouthing controversy last year. “Mangingibabaw at mangingibabaw ang mabuti nating pagkakaibigan (Our friendship will endure),” she told Toni in a letter. “Hindi lang kaibigan ang turing ko sa iyo. Isa kang kapatid, alam mo yan (I think of you as a sister, not just a friend. You know that).”

From the look of things, Mariel is starting 2011 on the right foot. Like her, have you experienced career and personal setbacks? Did you leave your old job because of work problems only to realize you never should have quit after all? Whatever your reasons are, returning to the workforce after a hiatus requires careful planning. If you think you’re ready to make a comeback, check out these five tips from FN.

1.    IT’S ALL IN THE ‘TUDE.

Making a successful comeback will not be easy, especially if you left your old job on a bad note. Start with adopting an optimistic view of life. If the reason you left was because you felt humiliated or oppressed, now is the time to build up your self-esteem and develop a stronger outer shell. This way, the next time someone attempts to push you in the wrong direction, you will have the confidence to just let it roll off your back and go on without being too affected.

2.    TAKE YOUR TIME.

The worst thing you can do is rush back into work when you’re not yet ready. If you come back while still harboring hurt feelings or thoughts of missed opportunities elsewhere, these can carry on over to your next job and affect your performance. Bide your time and develop your skills. That way, when you come back to work, you can blow everyone out of the water with your impressive skills and work ethic.

3.    GIVE YOURSELF A MAKEOVER.

Don’t think of this as a complete style overhaul; think of this as an opportunity for self-improvement. If you feel like you need a new hairstyle or wardrobe to match your change of attitude, by all means, go ahead and get one to highlight the new and improved you. It will brighten your outlook and make you feel excited about getting back to work.

4.    WHAT COMEBACK?

What makes the whole concept of making a comeback a dreaded issue for some is the fact that it emphasizes the fact that you left in the first place. Now, this doesn’t mean you should start saying you didn’t go anywhere, either. Instead, condition yourself into thinking of this as a new beginning that will bring you more great things.

5.    WELCOME CHANGE.

Let go of the past and welcome the future. Time has passed, and circumstances have changed. You can’t expect your work environment and workmates to stay exactly the same as they were when you left them, after all. Accept the differences that come with the job at hand, and consider your comeback as an opportunity to grow and start anew. As soon as you accept this fact, you will be able to breathe easier and respond to whatever new things are thrown at you, be they good or bad.
