Actress Maricel Soriano’s two household helpers, May Cachuela and Camille Acojedo, accused her of abusing them last week, PEP.ph reports. In a report on entertainment show The Buzz, radio commentator Mon Tulfo recounted how one of the helpers had a sister in Zambales who called him on air to report the Diamond Star’s physical and verbal abuse. Mon's camp helped them get medical exams, after which they filed a complaint against Maricel in Barangay Poblacion, Makati. In an interview with The Buzz conducted on July 1, May and Camille revealed that Maricel constantly hurled curses at them at home, but it was an incident on June 29 that finally convinced them to escape. Maricel was allegedly preparing for a taping, and as the two helpers were preparing her bag at her condominium unit, she told them to look for a particular makeup item. When they failed to find it, she started cursing them. “Sabi niya, 'Papatayin ko kayo (She said, ‘I’ll kill you both’),’” May recounts, as reported by PEP.ph.
Maricel allegedly kicked May’s thigh after ordering her to hand Maricel a cigarette case. “Tapos yun po, noong ano na, noong sabi niya, 'Iiyak ka pa? Magpa-medical ka kung gusto mo!’ Sabi niya, 'Hindi ako matatakot sa 'yo! Magdemanda ka, sige, magdemanda ka! Marami akong pera! Hindi mo ako kaya (Afterward, she said, ‘Will you keep crying? You can go get a medical test, for all I care!’ She said, ‘I’m not afraid of you! Sue me! I have lots of money. You can’t win against me’),’” she is quoted as saying. Maricel even threatened to shoot May, which allegedly did not come to fruition because Maricel’s son, Tien, was there to mediate.
The helpers made their escape that same day, employing Tien’s help to sign their clearance, which allowed them to leave the building. The bodyguards also helped to hide them when Maricel started looking for them.
The two also claimed Maricel was a drug user, which they consider the cause of her destructive behavior. "Para ho siyang utal-utal (It was like she was having trouble speaking),” May is quoted as saying to ABS-CBNNews.com.
As of press time, Maricel has not yet given a statement regarding the issue. She also failed to appear at the scheduled first meeting between her and her helpers at the barangay hall yesterday, PEP.ph reports. Meanwhile, Inday Castillo, Maricel’s assistant and the person who recruited the two helpers, accused them of stealing, an allegation May and Camille denied.
Barangay Poblacion secretary Alex Reyes said a previous complaint had been filed against Maricel earlier this year for refusing to pay a helper her wages. The complainant failed to appear afterward, however, so the issue was never resolved.
